De Hagia Sophia
De Hagia Sophia begon gedurende de tijd van het Byzantijnse rijk als een kathedraal, en was lang de grootste kathedraal ter wereld. Bij de opkomst van het Ottomaanse rijk werd de Hagia Sophia omgebouwd tot een moskee, waarna het de naam 'Aya Sophia' kreeg. Tegenwoordig heeft het gebouw geen officiële religieuze functie meer, maar is het een museum. Vele stukken uit zowel de tijd van het Byzantijnse rijk als het Ottomaanse rijk zijn daar nu te zien. Hierdoor is het naast een indrukwekkende bezienswaardigheid een buitenkans om de geschiedenis van Istanbul te leren kennen.
